Vale Base Metals A critical link
in Québec’s battery industry

Our project

Our plant will be located in Bécancour’s industrial park, at the heart of Québec’s emerging battery industry.

The facility will process several metric tons of refined nickel annually, enough to power 350,000 electric vehicles.

The project is made possible by a long-term commercial partnership with General Motors.

We will process high-purity, low carbon nickel from our refineries in Sudbury, Ontario, and Long Harbour, Newfoundland and Labrador.

A project for everyone

The electrification of transports is the most significant industrial shift ever launched. It offers an unprecedented opportunity for the Centre-du-Québec region. Vale Base Metals is proud to join the movement. Our project in Bécancour will make us a critical link in Québec’s battery industry.

We are looking forward to contributing to Bécancour’s economy and community. We are a good employer and a good neighbor.

A world leader

Headquartered in Toronto, Canada, Vale Base Metals is one of the world’s largest producers of responsibly sourced nickel, copper, cobalt, and platinum group metals.  In Canada, the U.K., Brazil, Japan, and Indonesia we produce critical minerals that power electric vehicles, create renewable energy solutions and help develop life-saving medical equipment.

Drawing on the expertise acquired in our nickel mines of Ontario, Manitoba, and Newfoundland and Labrador, Vale Base Metals will soon open North America’s first nickel sulphate facility. Here in Bécancour, we will produce a key component of lithium batteries used in electric vehicles. We will be aligning ourselves with the energy transition driven by the battery industry.
